In early 1969 Richard Nixon was in the White
House, the era of flower power was coming to a close and three local
men, Tom Reddington, Jim Eagen and Murray Dolitsky were at work
on a brand new idea. The first issue of Happenings Magazine arrived
in Northeastern Pennsylvania in June 1969. The magazine's original
mission was to encourage people to go from Scranton to
Wilkes-Barre, and vice versa, for cultural events. In 1971 Tom and
Ann Reddington, became sole owners of Happenings.
In 1996 what began as a publication run by three
men, became a publication produced by women! Paula Rochon Mackarey
has served as President since 1994, and Barbara Toolan has been
Managing Editor since 1995. The two met while students in Marywood
University's Communication Arts program where they majored in Public
Relations and Advertising. Little did they know the skills they
acquired running the university's newspaper, competing and (winning!) in
school sponsored national advertising and public relations competitions
would be applied to running a regional publication.
