- The Yankees have won 26 championships – more
than
any other team in any sport in history.
-
The symbol on their hat is an interlocking
N Y that
dates back to 1909.
-
Yankee Stadium in the Bronx has been
the team’s
home
since 1923. A drastically-remodeled stadium debuted
in
1976. Distinguishing characteristics include the white
facade above the scoreboard in the outfield (a facade
originally
ran around much of the front roof of the
Stadium’s
third deck before the ‘70s renovation) and
a 138-foot
exhaust pipe outside in the shape of a
baseball bat.
-
On August 16, 2006, ground was broken
for a new
Yankee Stadium to be used starting in 2009.
-
Monument Park, behind the outfield
wall, showcases
the team’s retired numbers and legendary player’s
monuments and plaques. It is one of the most
revered grounds
in all of sports.
-
16 Yankees have had their numbers
retired – which
is a great recognition for being among the greatest
Yankees
ever. Read about them at http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/history/retired_
numbers.jsp
-
The Yankee uniform has remained virtually
unchanged
for more than 70 years. The lack of a last
name across
the player’s back shoulders and the home jersey’s
pinstripes characterize the classic uniform.
-
Many of the most legendary players in all of baseball
were Yankees, such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio,
Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle.
-
The Boston Red Sox and the Yankees
have an intense
rivalry. Some say the “Curse of the Bambino” started
when Babe Ruth was sold from the Sox to the Yankees
in
1920 and ended when Boston won the 2004 World Series.
-
Joe Torre is the team’s current
manager. He has collected championships in 4 of his 11
seasons managing the Yankees.
-
George M. Steinbrenner III, or “The Boss,” is
the team’s
Principal Owner and holds the title for
the longest-tenured
owner in baseball. He is known to have
very high
expectations and no-nonsense tolerance with his
franchise.
- “Yankees win. The-e-e Yankees Win!” is
radio announcer
John Sterling’s now-famous call after every
Yankee victory.
-
The New York Yankees are the Major
League team.
The S/WB Yankees are the Triple-A team -
only one
step below the Major Leagues. Players are at
Triple-A
to prepare for a call up to the Majors – which
can
happen at any time.
-
Many current NYY Yankee stars have come up through
the
Triple-A team, including Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera,
Jorge
Posada, Melky Cabrera and hitting coach
Don Mattingly.
-
The Yankees Triple-A affiliate before
the S/WB
Yankees were the Columbus Clippers, based in
Columbus, Ohio.
-
Before the regular season, the Yankees prepare
during
Spring Training at Legends Field in Tampa,
Florida.
-
Some players that may end up with
the S/WB team
were invited to train with the big leaguers
at Spring
Training and show their skills to the Major
League
coaches.
-
Bob Sheppard is known as “The Voice
of Yankee
Stadium.” He’s
been the Yankees Public Address
Announcer since 1951.
-
Earning the title of being the Yankees Captain is a
high
honor reserved only for the most worthy players.
Derek
Jeter is the current captain and has served in
that capacity
since 2003.
-
Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig were the only Yankees
to
win the Triple Crown (most Home Runs, highest RBI
and highest
Batting Average).
-
Alex Rodriguez was the last Yankee named MVP (2005).
-
Roger Clemens was the last Yankee to win the Cy
Young
award (2001).
-
Mariano Rivera finished 2006 with
a 1.80 ERA and 34
saves as the Yankees closer. He has
413 saves – the
most
of any Yankee, the most ever in the American
League and
ranks fourth on MLB’s all-time list.
-
Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and
Mariano
Rivera were 2006 All-Stars from the Yankees.
-
Whitey Ford is the NYY pitcher with the most wins.
His
career spanned from 1950-1967.
-
Babe Ruth has the most home runs (659) and highest
batting
average (.349) of any Yankee ever.
